Figurative sculpture, today

What significance would the outdoor space in the Barcelona Pavilion have without the figurative sculpture of Georg Kolbe? That is the question of the working thesis ‘Figurative sculpture today’. What exterior space is found in the literature of Cees Nooteboom, for example? It is Zurich’s most beautiful fountain, the figure of the ‘unknown’ sculptor Eduard Zimmermann (1872-1949). Or consider the contrast-rich neighbourhood of Hermann Haller’s museum beside Le Corbusier’s Heidi Weber Museum in Zürichhorn park. Both forms of expression tolerate each other without a relationship. These noted, figurative sculptures enliven the place in a striking fashion, returning feeling to abstraction.
